Why the Manufacturer Matters
EMI tape (also called EMI shielding tape, shielding tape or conductive tape) is a functional material made by coating a conductive fabric with adhesive. Even products with similar-looking datasheets can differ greatly in real shielding performance and production reliability, because the plating quality of the fabric and the adhesive formulation determine the outcome. For industries that demand long-term supply and quality traceability — mobile, display, automotive electronics — the choice of manufacturer sets the upper limit of your product quality.
Here are five criteria that purchasing and development engineers should verify when evaluating an EMI tape manufacturer.
The 5-Point Checklist
1) Integrated production — do they make the fabric themselves?
More than half of an EMI tape's performance is determined by the conductive fabric. A converter that buys fabric externally and only applies adhesive is fundamentally different from a manufacturer that performs electroless/electrolytic plating of non-conductive fabric and adhesive coating in-house — in quality traceability, lead time and the range of property tuning. Solueta is the only EMI tape manufacturer in Korea with a fully integrated plating-to-coating production system, controlling every step from fabric properties to adhesive formulation. (See our Manufacturing Technology page.)
2) Property customization capability
Every application demands a different combination of thickness, adhesion and resistance. Check whether the manufacturer only supplies catalog items, or can formulate its own adhesives and tune Tg, adhesion, cohesion and heat resistance for your application — plus change substrate thickness, single/double-sided structure and die-cut dimensions.
3) Reliability test program
What matters more than initial properties is how they hold up over time. Verify that the manufacturer can provide reliability data — high/low temperature, humidity and aging tests — with the test standards specified (KS, ASTM, MIL, etc.). Figures vary by test standard, so always compare manufacturers on the same standard.
4) Mass-production track record and credentials
Approval by global customers is itself a validation of a quality system. Ask which industries (mobile, display, automotive, battery) the manufacturer supplies in mass production, and whether it holds related patents or awards. Solueta supplies global customers including Apple, Samsung and LG, and its conductive cushion tape was selected as a World-Class Product of Korea for eight consecutive years.
5) Technical support
The practical difference shows in support: will they recommend a product from your drawing and target specs, provide samples and custom sizes, and review the noise/grounding problem with you? A manufacturer that joins you at the material-selection stage shortens your development schedule.
Comparison Points at a Glance
| Item | Questions to Ask |
|---|---|
| Integrated production | Do you plate the conductive fabric yourself, or purchase it? |
| Customization | Do you formulate adhesives in-house? Can thickness, adhesion and resistance be tuned? |
| Reliability | Can you provide humidity/aging test data with the test standard specified? |
| Track record | Which industries and customers do you supply in mass production? Patents, awards? |
| Support | Do you support drawing-based recommendations, samples and die-cutting? |
FAQ
- How do I tell a manufacturer from a converter?
- Ask whether they own the plating process for the conductive fabric. A true manufacturer can adjust properties at the source (the plated layer), while a converter depends on external fabric supply for both quality and lead time.
- What should I prepare when requesting samples?
- Share the application drawing (or a photo), target thickness and adhesion, the substrate to be bonded, and the operating environment (temperature/humidity) — you will get a suitable product and processing proposal much faster. You can request the same review through the Contact button below.
